Isaiah is a book of the Old Testament.
1 – The title of the book
Hebrew text – “Isaiah” (1:1). Isaiah means “Salvation is of Jehovah”.
2 – The author of the book
Isaiah (1:1) Three points confirm Isaiah wrote the whole book:-
- This is the traditional Jewish view – There is no mention of a second great Isaiah.
- There are things which appear in both sections of the book. (E.g. “The Holy One of Israel”).
- In the second half of the book there are references to show that it is not post-exilic. (See 62:6 – Jerusalem’s walls were standing).
3 – The historical setting
Isaiah is in the southern Kingdom. He prophesied during the reigns of four Kings; Uzziah, Jothan, Ahaz & Hezekiah (790 – 686 B C) Also at this time there was Micah in the south and Hosea in the north. Isaiah will be prophesying at the time the Northern Kingdom fell.
4 – The theme of the book
The salvation of Jehovah.
5 – The structure of the book
- The prophet’s condemnation (Chapters 36 – 39)
- Prophecies concerning Jerusalem and Judah.(1-12)
- Prophecies concerning the nations (13-23)

6 – Selected studies from the book
- The position of Isaiah and his children. Isaiah’s second son, Mahershalahashbaz, is a sign that the Northern Kingdom will be carried off before the child can say “mamma”. The name Mahershalalhasbaz means “speed to the spoil, hurry to the prey”. This is the story of the second half of the book. Isaiah’s name means “Salvation is of Jehovah”. This is the story of the whole of the book.
