The Sin Of Satan – Isaiah 14:12-14

We read in this passage that Lucifer brought conflict between his will and the will of God by treasuring five sinful desires in his heart. These five desires known as the “I wills” ultimately bring about his downfall.

1 – “I will ascend into Heaven”

There are three types of heaven mentioned in the Bible.

  • The first heaven – This is the atmosphere where we live and birds can fly.
  • The second heaven – This is interstellar space where we find the stars, moon and planets.
  • The third heaven – This is God’s control centre.

Lucifer was dwelling in the second heaven and now desires to dwell in the third heaven. It is not that Lucifer desired to visit Heaven (He had been there) or to spend more time there but rather he wanted to be equal with God and dwell in Heaven. This was against the will of God.

2 – “I will exalt my throne above the stars of God”

The “stars of God” are the angelic host. See Job 38:7 and Revelation 1:20. Here Lucifer is saying that he’ll make the angels subject to him, rather than God. The angels were subject to God because He was their creator but Lucifer wanted to rule God’s subjects. One of God’s creatures wanted to be the sole administrator. This was against the will of God.

3 – “I will also sit upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north”

In this statement Lucifer expressed a desire to control all the affairs of the Universe. The mount of the congregation expressed God’s right to rule. See Isaiah 2:2 & Psalm 48:2.

4. ” I will ascend above the heights of the clouds”

The cloud is a visible manifestation to the people of Israel that God is present. See Exodus 40:34; Exodus 16:10; 1 Kings 8:10 and Matthew 24:30. This cloud was a cloud of glory. Lucifer wanted a greater glory than that which belonged to God. This is impossible because God has infinite glory and Lucifer as a created being, has no glory of his own.

5. “I will be like the most high”

Lucifer admitted he was a created being. He was the wisest if God’s creatures but he did not know all things. He was the most powerful of God’s creatures but he was not all powerful. He wanted to take total responsibility from God by taking over as God. So why did Lucifer do it? Why did he sin when he had so much already? The cause is clearly seen as pride and covetousness on the part of Lucifer. See Proverbs 16:17-19 & Ezekiel 28:17-18. We need humility to combat pride. Moses was very humble. See Numbers 12:3. Let us be careful that we avoid this awful sin that Lucifer fell into.
