Israel’s future hope is the result of the activity of the activity of God. The glorious future is connected with the Branch of the Lord.
1. The disgrace of the wicked women (vs. 1)
This verse really continues on from chapter 3. In the day of the Lord most of the men will be killed. The ratio is six out of every seven.
2. The Branch of the Lord (vs. 2-6)
These verses are looking again at the future glory of Jerusalem. Notice the main features:-
-
The Lord will have great glory (vs. 2). It refers to Him who would be a branch, or descendant of Jesse through King David. See Zechariah 6:12, Jeremiah 23:5-6 and 33:14-15. One thing to notice about this title of Jesus is that it is only applied to Him when referring to His reign on earth for a thousand years, in the Millennial Kingdom.
-
Israel will be blessed (vs. 3-4). Right now, its name is prophetic, for “Jerusalem” means “Vision of Peace.” But there is a time coming, when Jesus rules and reigns from Jerusalem, that the prophetic name will no longer be needed. The peace will no longer be a vision, but a reality. See also Ezek. 48:35. Jerusalem will be renamed, “Yahweh-Shammah,” meaning, “the Lord is there.” It will be a holy city, and the Lord will have purged the filthiness of sin from the place.
-
Jehovah will bless all living people (vs. 5-6). The pillar of fire and cloud manifested God’s glory. See Exodus 13:21-22. God’s glory is essential for Israel’s survival and success. One of the things that God provides for His people is protection. This is emphasized in the words “canopy”, “shelter”, “shade”, refuge” and “hiding place”. Once God withdrew His presence they were defenceless. God will protect His people in the future as He has done in the past.
