God’s Universal Reign – Isaiah 2:1-22

The verses 1-5 are very similar to Micah 4:1-5. The two men were around at the same time. It is hard to speculate that one copied from the other or used the same written source. Isaiah and Micah prophesied that which the Holy Spirit moved each of them to prophecy. God was their source.

1. The future Jerusalem (vs. 1-5)

The “last days” refers to Messianic times yet to come. Note the following characteristics:-

  • Topographical changes. (vs. 2)
  • All people will come to Jerusalem to bless and worship the God of Israel. (vs. 2-3).
  • God’s law shall be taught to all. (vs. 3).
  • God shall judge and there shall be no more wars. (vs. 4).

2. The present Jerusalem (vs. 6-22)

There is a conflict with the glorious future to come. Specific sins are mentioned:-

  • False religion – witches, etc. (vs. 6)
  • Materialism. (vs. 7).
  • Idolatry (vs. 8-9).

The judgment of God is promised if these sins are not swiftly rectified. (vs. 10-22). The judgment is effective and specific:-

  • Proud men will be humbled. (vs. 11-17).
  • Idols will be put away. (vs. 18).
  • Wicked men will hide in holes and caves in fear and throw away their idols. (vs. 19-27).

Israel is shown just how temporal their sins really are. God will carry on His good work and do as He will, no matter what we do. Their sins will cease one way or another, so why do they not repent?
