In this passage we are able to eavesdrop on a family conversation.
1 – Jacob’s conversation with his sons (vs. 1-2)
Jacob is annoyed with his sons as they are not doing anything. Jacob saw the corn his neighbours had bought in Egypt, and brought home. Jacob takes the initiative. You can’t just sit there, you have to do something! There is provision in Christ; but we must come to him, and seek it from him. Jacob does not go himself as he is elderly.
2 – Joseph’s conversation with his brothers (vs. 3-10)
Joseph puts his brothers to the test. He knows his heart has changed, what about his brothers? They may have done away with Benjamin as well. Twenty years have passed; he is dressed in Egyptian garments and is governor of Egypt. His brothers do not recognise him. Joseph instantly recognised them. Joseph noticed that his full brother Benjamin was missing. Joseph’s other brothers were “hard men”. Joseph will not render evil for evil.
3 – God’s conversation with us
God is at work in our world. You may be in prison or a palace, but God is still at work. God permits things to come into our lives. We are not helpless victims driven along by chance. We are all part of history. We are all part of God’s plan. God believes that we are precious – that we are special. There is no one else like you in the whole world. God is in control. Do you believe it? It is true! God is provident. He never drops the ball.
