The battle between Christianity and Secular Humanism is the primary war of the 21st century. There are a number of conflicts between Christianity and Secular Humanism and there can be no compromise as the two are clearly enemies when you consider the main differences.
1 – The idea and name of God
Christianity sees the highest being as being God Almighty while Secular Humanism sees man as the highest being. God’s name means nothing to the humanist, because he does not believe God exists. It is a fundamental belief. God’s name is a byword or swear word rather than one honoured in worship or prayer. The relationship with God is more important than the relationship with mankind. The Bible makes it clear in verses like below.
Acts 5:29 “Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!”
Hebrews 11:6 “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him”
Romans 1:25 says, “Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.”
2 – The view on Jesus Christ
The Secular Humanist believes that Jesus was a mere man – if he even existed at all! They are atheistic so this should come as no surprise. The birth, life, teachings and death of Jesus has no special meaning and the resurrection from the dead did not happen. The Christian view is the complete opposite. It is the difference between light and darkness. The Christian believes that Jesus was God come in the flesh to bring salvation and eternal life to those who accept Him.
3 – Creation
Secular Humanists will talk of “nature” and see evolution as a scientific fact and the only way to explain the existence of life, This is a natural conclusion since they deny the existence of God. Anyone who disagrees is typically considered ignorant. Christians will often talk of of “creation” and “creator” and will follow truly scientific evidence (as well as Biblical revelation) that God is the Creator. Evolution from one species to another is seen as an unproven theory which is not substantiated by evidence. Adaptation within species is accepted as it can be clearly seen but the jump from species to another species will never be found as it does not exist!
4 – The Bible.
The Secular Humanistic rejects the Bible as an inspired revelation from God to mankind. Indeed, it is often necessary to attack the claims of the Bible. As atheism is a major tenant of it’s belief system, then this is no great surprise. Christianity can point to the history and prophetic nature of the Bible as proof of it’s valid message. The Bible itself is scathing of the teachings of Secular Humanism so it is not surprising that they often portray it as barbaric or unscientific. The idea that man is basically good is rejected.
Romans 3:10-12 “As it is written: There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one”.
The Bible also declares that truth is found not by looking to men, but by looking to God.
Jeremiah 17:5,9 “This is what the Lord says: ‘Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the Lord'” and “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?”
God makes human wisdom appear foolish using his own plans to bring salvation and eternal life to mankind through Jesus. The Secular Humanist is missing God’s message and cannot bring salvation. It will fail as all human philosophies have failed before it. It is like the Greek Hellenistic culture all over again. It failed then and it will fail again.
1 Corinthians 1:20 “Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?”
Acts 4:12 “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved”
5 – Moral values
Secular Humanists believe that some things are right for some people and that some situations that may be “wrong” for other people and other situations. There is no absolute right and wrong as everything depends on the situation. Christianity teaches that God has established some things as absolutely right and others as absolutely wrong. If God says that certain behaviour is sin, it is wrong for us to convince ourselves that the behaviour is really okay. There is areas that are not black and white and these are considered as areas of liberty unless it affects the conscience of the person we are with.
The Secular Humanists are working in direct opposition to the New Testament church. They believe that you can do anything you want, just as long as no one else gets hurt. However, that is NOT what the Bible teaches. We are commanded in the Bible to OBEY GOD rather than men (Acts 5:29). How can Humanists obey God when they deny that He even exists? Without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6).
Secular Humanism is a religion and philosophy of life which views man as the supreme being of the universe. It rejects the existence of God and the supernatural. Moral values are relative and can change from person to person. it is a poison of society. See Colossians 2:8 “Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ”. It is not a new battle and it is not passive. It is aggressive and seeks to force converts. It is demonic in its origin. Lot was affected by this philosophy and he could do nothing against it. See 2 Peter 2:7 – “and righteous Lot, worn down by the conduct in lasciviousness of the impious, He did rescue” (Youngs Literal Translation).
