Characteristics of Christian Discipleship

God wants to increase the density of the material. Our properties make us this way. A property is a distinct feature. There are key characteristics in Christian discipleship.

1. The ability to receive instruction

The word “instruction” can refer to several things. Direction, order and imparted knowledge. We don’t like to take orders. There are Bible verses you should read. See Proverbs 8:33-34. Matthew 28:18-20.

Without instruction we are weak and ineffective. We need to receive it or we go wayward. We go back to Egypt.

2. The ability to show initiative

People who take instruction can think for themselves. They have received knowledge to show their own initiative. It needs to be initiative in a good sense not bad! We still need to keep taking instruction. Luke 6:31-34.

3. The ability to live with insight

The able to perceive clearly or deeply. You can spot the truth so you can spot lies. Even if you see clearly you may need to look deeply. Proverbs 2:8-11. Insight will keep an eye out for you. It stops you getting into trouble. You can spot the enemy. Watch out! Keep the right company. Proverbs 3:13-18.

4. The ability to not intimidate or be intimidated

The word intimidation means “to scare or frighten with threats”. Few people have gone through life without experiencing it or dishing it out. There are three ways of acting and responding to intimidation.

  • Child – The child tries to control by temper tantrum. They throw the toys out of pram or they are overly nice. It is manipulation. There are people who are pensioners who act in this way! They will even pretend to cry to try to get their way. We are not to let them take control. If we respond in the same way then nothing changes.
  • Parent – The parent tries to control by telling them what to do. This can be good but bad if the person doesn’t develop into an adult. There is a need to find out for yourselves. You have to let go and learn by mistakes. We ultimately need to act as an adult. If we respond in the same way then again nothing changes.
  • Adult – The adult has a reasoned conversation and comes to a conclusion. You have the ability to take advice and change things. You have to have insight. There is no need for emotional control. Deuteronomy 31:6 and John 14:27. The bully when bullied is a coward. It is children who bully. Step up into adulthood when dealing with a child. You need to confront in a reasoned way and at the opportune moment. Be a victor rather than a victim.

Watch out for the intimidating questions. See Matthew 4:3, Matthew 27:40 and Luke 22:70. Jesus batted the ball back.  It is a form of intimidation. It can be countered by answering with questions. We don’t use words to intimidate people. Jesus was always an adult in his thinking.
