Why Are We On Earth?

Why are we on planet Earth? The assumption I make is that there is a divine creator who put us here. Here are a few thoughts I had:-

1. The Bible is the revelation to man of this divine creator

The Lord God is the creator. He wants us to know about Him and there is no other way apart from this divine relation given to inspired writers over the centuries. The Bible is “God-breathed”. The harmony of the Bible with its theme of man’s redemption and fulfilled prophecies of the Messiah and Second Coming have given mankind hope and purpose.

 2. The Earth is unique for life

It is good for us that the creator knows what He is doing. We wouldn’t want to be on any other planet! Mars or Venus are close by to us but can’t sustain human life or perhaps even bacterial life, as far as we know. This planet is teeming with life! God saw and it was good. There are people, plants, animals, insects, birds, etc, etc. We are still finding new species of plants and ones that they thought were extinct! Life adapts within a species (look at all the types of dogs) but no species has evolved into another. Evolution cannot be shown in the lab. Any creation requires a creator. The argument is not between religion and science but rather between creationists and scientists. Religion and science are not in conflict.

3. The angels and mankind

We know from the Bible that prior to our creation that God had created the angels and that they also had free will. There was a rebellion in the heavens led by “Lucifer” one of the chief angels and other angels who followed him. He had become proud and wanted to take the place of God. This rebellion was doomed to failure and those who had sinned were expelled. Lucifer and the fallen angels became Satan and his demons. No mercy of chance of redemption was given.

God starts a new “experiment” with mankind. Mankind would be from the dust of the earth but would be in the image of God in a spiritual sense. Satan causes Adam and Eve to also fall into sin and are expelled from the garden of Eden and the whole of creation is affected as the consequences of sin. This time however God does something different. There is the promise of redemption for mankind. This is something that is gradually revealed clearer throughout history and it astounds the angels.

1 Peter 1:12 – “To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things which angels desire to look into”

4. The future of Earth

The Bible gives detailed descriptions in regard to the final battle between good and evil in a number of passages, in which God destroys his enemies both demonic and human. Some passages below to wet your appetite!

  • Isaiah 11:6-9
  • Isaiah 65:17-24
  • Isaiah 66:22-24
  • 2 Peter 3:13
  • Revelation 21-22

There will be a new or restored earth with an end to sin and sinners. The new Earth will be paradise with a return to how God intended things to be. A creation where man and nature are back in harmony and Satan is out-of-the-way for good. The promise of God to crush Satan is fulfilled in the death and resurrection of Christ and will be finalised when Jesus returns to take possession of the earth and His people. You are on this earth with an opportunity to leave behind your sin, follow Jesus and live forever with Him. Do nothing and your end remains the same as that of Satan and his demons. The opportunity is now!
