It was the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible in November 2011. A book that is a literary masterpiece and has had great influence on the English-speaking world. David Cameron was at Oxford’s Christ Church Cathedral giving a speech to mark this landmark. His speech reminded us of Christian values that have shaped Britain and made it one of the safer places in Europe for people of other religions. Despite having a Christian heritage, Britain cannot be said to be a Christian country in terms of its current social values.
It was a pity that the Prime minister talked about Christian values and failed to take the opportunity to quote to us all some of the great words from the Bible. The Christian faith is not so much about being good, as allowing God to do good through us. It is a gospel of undeserved grace. Sinners saved by grace, Beggars telling other beggars where to find food. Sinless perfection doesn’t happen until heaven but with help from God we can do much good in the meantime. So here are a few words of wisdom from the “good book” that David Cameron didn’t mention perhaps because he is not that committed as a Christian.
- Alcohol abuse – “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise”(Proverbs 20:1). There are plenty other references on the same issue. Alcohol abuse is a bigger terror to British society than international terrorism will ever be.
- Financial abuse – “If you lend money to any of my people with you who is poor, you shall not be like a moneylender to him, and you shall not exact interest from him” (Exodus 22:25). Again, plenty of other verses. The extortionate interest rates charged by banks and financial institutions coupled with their gambling of other people’s money got the world into the current financial mess. Will legislation stop it happening again? Pity we didn’t have Jesus going in to sort them out like the money-changers in the Temple.
- Marriage abuse – “Marriage should be honoured by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral”. (Hebrews 13:4). This might be too conservative for the Conservative party! God’s divine law of sexual purity is that only marriage (defined as one man and one woman from other verses) is the divine model. The rest is immorality. What sort of world would it be with less rapes, incest, homosexuality, prostitution, abortions, co-habiting couples and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)? A healthier one for sure. The government response is typically to pass out the condoms!
David Cameron hasn’t had a religious conversion. It sounds more like he is somewhere between agnostic and Christian. The Christian men who gave us the translation of the Bible in English paid dearly with their lives as they were hounded and persecuted by those who wanted to keep it hidden. It is good that Christianity is mentioned by the leader of our country. It is just a pity that so many of our laws seem to hound and persecute those Christian values the country needs.
Here we are now in 2012/2013 and the PM David Cameron seems to have had a vision about marriage. It was not in the Conservative manifesto or something that went to the public for a vote. Instead the country is being pushed into accepting “same-sex” marriage to be the same as “opposite-sex” marriage. It seems it isn’t “fair” to make a distinction in this modern “enlightened” age. I think he is throwing away the King James Bible for sure now. Religion and politics don’t mix and poor David Cameron (Conservative?) hasn’t a clue it seems about either!
