Have you ever wondered what the Bible has to say about marriage? There are hundreds of verses in the Bible that talk about it. It is not a silent issue or one that is confusing the understand. The first wedding takes place shortly after the creation of the first man and woman, Adam and Eve.

Gen. 2:18, 21-24

The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him’…and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the place with flesh.

Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, ‘This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.’ For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

Marriage is God’s idea, designed and instituted by the Creator. Why is it that people and governments have been seeking to undermine and redefine it? It is nothing new. It has been happening for centuries and it is happening again today. There is nothing new under the sun according to Ecclesiastes 1:29. Civilisations have been destroyed when marriage has become corrupted and neglected. The reason can be traced back to sin. In these verses in Genesis the fall of Adam and Eve has not yet happened. Marriage was good. It is after the fall that perversions came that led to God scattering people with languages at Babel and then later destroying Sodom and Gomorrah.

A blueprint refers to a detailed plan from usually a designer, engineer or architect. This blueprint would be used to create exact copies. E.g. A house. An imitation could be spotted if it was not according to the original design. God’s blueprint is written down in the Bible. The blueprint has been copied in every human culture throughout the world. When you start copying the copy rather than the blueprint then things can start to go wrong.

In the New Testament things have not changed from the original design we have in the Old Testament. When some Pharisees confronted Jesus about grounds for divorce, His response affirmed God’s original and perfect blueprint for marriage—the Creation ideal (Mt 19:1-6). We are also told “Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled, but fornicators and adulterers God will judge”. Hebrews 13:4. God is more clear on the issue than many people and governments. The Bible teaches that human sex is only holy within marriage. This marriage is between opposite sexes – one man and one woman. Any other sexual relations outside of marriage is sin that God will judge. Marriage means that much to God!
