Imagine a shoreless sea stretching to eternity in whatever direction you look. In the midst of this shoreless sea is a small island. The shoreless sea can be used to represent eternity and the small island represents time. We have in Psalm 90:2 eternity past and eternity future and this explains to us about time. Time is finite but eternity is infinite. If we move back before time we discover from the Bible that there was two eternal entities.
1 – The eternal God
See Deuteronomy 33:27; John 1:1 and Hebrews 9:14. The Bible speaks about the trinity and how it existed before creation. See Genesis 1:1. There are three possible explanations for the creation of the Universe.
- It all came from nothing.
- All that is created came from an impersonal force. E.g. evolution.
- It has come from a personal beginning. E.g. God is eternal.
The existence of an infinite, personal, triune God explains the personality, complexity, unity in diversity and meaning and purpose in our lives. So it is logical to believe in God. So in eternity past the only person who existed was God and He was the planner.
2 – The eternal decree
See Ephesians 3:11 and Ephesians 1:11-12. These verses indicate that God has an eternal purpose. A definition of the degree is “His eternal purpose according to the counsel of His will, whereby for His glory, He has foreordained whatsoever comes to pass.” There are seven characteristics of this eternal decree.
- It is eternal. (Ephesians 3:11).
- This decree lies in eternity past before time existed.
- The purpose of God is not patchwork. He is not arranging it as time goes on. He had it finished before time began.
- Founded on God’s wisdom (Ephesians 3:10) God’s eternal purpose is founded on God’s wisdom. Within the persons of the Godhead the plan was formulated. See Ephesians 1:11. After this council God’s will was made clear. God’s plan was not based ont he decisions that man was to make. It was based on God’s will. God decided on this plan because it brought great pleasure to Him. It was not for man’s pleasure but for God’s pleasure. See Ephesians 1:9.
- It was formed for His glory (Ephesians 1:11-12) The answer why God lets things happen is because He chose these things to happen for His glory. If God’s character and attributes are going to be displayed then it has to be for His glory.
- It is going to come to pass. No man can stop God’s decree.
- It will not change. God’s plan will remain the same.
- It is absolute. The decree is totally self-dependant upon itself. All the conditions necessary to bring about any part of this decree will be provided.
- This decree is all inclusive. All things that happen are in the decree of God.
3 – Conclusions
This dispensation is found in Genesis 9-11.
- This eternal decree is not consistent with man’s freedom and responsibility. There is no conflict.
- This plan does not destroy human motivation. This doctrine should increase human motivation.
- God is not the author of sin.
