Evolution sees marriage as not something that started from the beginning of mankind but something that was socially evolved over time. Marriage is under attack by those who consider it to be an antiquated piece of tradition which can now be dispensed with by our more enlightened and liberated age. We see people living together without getting married (fornication), swinging (adultery) and attempts to redefine marriage as also including two men and two women. (homosexuality).

Marriage was designed by God and is not some humanly devised institution. See Genesis 2:18,23 & Matthew 19:4-6. It was set in motion from the beginning of creation. God saw that it was not good for Adam to be on his own. He needed a helper to complement and complete him. The animals had mates, but Adam was alone. It was God who created Eve and brought her to the man. It was God, as the Lord Jesus points out in Matthew 19:4, who ordained the physical relationship which was to be consummated only within the marriage covenant. God protects marriage and allows sexual intercourse only inside this close union. See Ecclesiastes 9:9. Sexual relations before or outside of marriage is branded as fornication and immorality. God has provided marriage as a preventative to fornication and a means to sanctification. See 1 Corinthians 7:2, 9, 13.

The God-given relationship between man and woman is expressed most clearly in the comparison with the relationship between Christ and the Church. See Ephesians 5:24-25. The women is to be the helper to the man but not as a ruler of the man. The role assigned to man neither leads to a slavish submission of women as in Islam, nor the rivalry aspired to by the women’s liberation movement.
