This survey covers Song of Solomon in the Old Testament.
1 – The title of the book
- Hebrew text – “The most beautiful song of Solomon”. (See 1 Kings 4:32).
- Greek & Latin text – “The song of Songs”. From first two words in the Hebrew text.
- English text – “Canticle” or “The best song”.
2 – The author of the book
Solomon (See 1:1, 4, 11-13; 6:8, 9 & I Kings 4:33). This book was disputed in the early Church because it was considered to be pornographic. However, in A D 90 the book was accepted into the canon of scripture.
3 – The historical setting
During the early reign of Solomon (See 6:8).
4 – The theme of the book
It is the exaltation of love.
5 – The structure of the book
- The description of the wedding day of Solomon and his bride. (Chapter 1:2 – 2:7).
- A recount of the courting days. (Chapter 2:8 – 3:5).
- The betrothal day. (Chapter 3:5 – 5:1) She remembers the day when Solomon came to pick her up.
- She has troubled dream (Chapter 5:2 – 6:3) She is recalling the time she almost lost Solomon.
- Solomon returns and the bride is praised. (Chapter 6:4 – 7:10).
- The bride invites her husband to go back to her home in Lebanon. (Chapter 7:11 – 8:4).
- They do go back home and there is the renewal of love in her old home. (Chapter 8:5 – 14) The birth of Samuel – Chapters 1-3.
6 – Selected studies from the book
- To teach the purity and importance of physical love. God has ordained the love/sex relationship.
- It does provide for us in our generation, a wholesome balance between the two extremes of sexual excessiveness and asceticism.
- The interpretation of the book:-
- It is allegorical and not historical.
- The dramatic view is that the book was not in existence with the Semites in the Old Testament.
- The typical view is that the relationship between Solomon and the girl illustrates: God’s live for Israel, Christ’s love for the Church or God’s love for the soul. The historical setting is ignored.
- The literal view is that the song is about love.
