Judgment Day – Revelation 20:11-15

This is a court like the world has never seen. The last person to live has already died. The last person to rise has already been raised. See Hebrews 9:27. It is the Great White Throne Judgment. There is no legal system like this one. This is not judgment for believers but for unbelievers. The case for the believer has been settled out of court. See Romans 8:1. This is judgment day with no appeals, second chances, jury or mistrial.

1 – The face of the judge (vs. 11)

The heaven and earth flee away from the face of this judge like scalded dogs looking for a place to hide or cockroaches running away from the light. The sun is afraid to shine, the moon is too afraid to glow the stars are too afraid to twinkle.

  • His powerful authority (vs. 11) – He is a King sitting upon a Great White Throne. The Judge is also the King. See Hebrews 2:3. How can we reject such a great salvation? The greatness of the Saviour awaits those His great salvation.
  • His perfect integrity (vs. 11) – It is a white throne. White is a symbol of purity in the Bible. He will be an impartial judge. There will be no questioning this judge. His judgments are always in righteousness. See Psalm 9:7.
  • His personal identity (vs. 11) – Who is this person? It is the Lord Jesus Himself. See John 5:22. You can meet Jesus at the cross or in a courtroom. You don’t get to choose whether you meet Him but you get to choose where you meet Him! You can meet Him as the Lamb of God or as the Lion of Judah. You can meet Him in joy or in judgment. You can meet Him now or later when it is too late. Every knee will bow at the feet of Jesus. Will Jesus judge this world? If you want to disprove it then show me the body of Jesus. You won’t be able to do it because Jesus is alive. The resurrection of Jesus is our assurance that God will judge the world.

2 – The fate of the judged (vs. 12-13)

Notice two things:-

  • Their standing for judgment (vs. 12) – There is both small and great. The thieves and the bank robbers are there. The verdict has already been written while these people were living. They are here for the sentencing. You are either condemned or saved right now. See John 3:18-19. Why are people condemned already? For not believing on Jesus Christ. It is a belief that causes action. The self-righteous will be in this group. Those who think they are good enough will find out differently! You could have everything but Jesus and go to Hell.
  • Their standard of judgment (vs. 12) – There was things that were written in books. Every deed is recorded in these books. If you don’t want to see it in print then don’t let it happen. Secrets will be revealed into the light. See Luke 12:2 and Ecclesiastes 12:14. God will not forget one detail. They will be judged according to their works. These works cannot save you but they will be used to judged you if you do not have Jesus Christ. See Galatians 2:16.

3 – The force of the judgment (vs. 14-15)

There will be no appeal, jury verdict or defence attorney. Death and hell are cast into the Lake of Fire. It is all over. You may know Jesus Christ but what about the rest of your family? You can’t read this with glee when you think of those loved ones who don’t know Jesus. The good news is that you can be saved. The answer is to come to Jesus. He suffered for you so that you don’t have to suffer.
