I Shall Return – Revelation 19:11-21

Jesus had promised when he left this earth that he would return. See Matthew 24 & Revelation 1:7 for example. We can count on the promise of God. God does not lie. See Numbers 23:19. We are awaiting the return of Jesus Christ. The world thinks we are moving towards something. History and prophecy points to the return of Jesus Christ.

1 – The prediction of the return of Jesus Christ

It is mentioned throughout the Bible in Zechariah, Isaiah and Joel for example. John looks up in Revelation 19:11 and sees a door open in Heaven. This door is not open for John to go up but rather for Jesus to come down.

  • It should secure us – We have an anchor of the soul. See Hebrews 6:13. The return of Jesus Christ is sure and this should secure us in life. We should not sink in the quicksand of anything else. God will make things right when Jesus returns.
  • It should sanctify us – It affects the way we live our lives. See 1 John 3:1-3. This hope purifies those who believe in Jesus Christ. We do not know when He is going to return. How is the garden of your life as we await the return of Jesus Christ?
  • It should satisfy us – The return of Jesus Christ guarantees us victory. We know who is going to win. We already know the outcome. The Bible tells us how the final battle is going to end.

2 – The pre-eminence of the return of Jesus Christ (vs. 11-13)

He is not coming in humility. He is coming with glorification. This time Jesus is coming as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Notice the comparison:-

First Coming (Gospels) Second Coming (Revelation)
He receives death He rebukes death
His enemies look and applaud him His enemies look and appeal Him
He comes in misery He comes in majesty
He comes to convict He comes to condemn
He is Saviour He is a Sentencer
He is pierced He is praised
He gets thorns He gets a throne
He gets a cross He gets a crown
He is a criminal He is a conqueror
He gets the guilt He gets the glory
  • In His nature (vs. 11) – He is riding a white horse. He is not sneaking into town. He is coming in power and in glory. Satan’s day will be over! There is a new day coming. White is the colour of purity and holiness. The conquering general would always lead a procession upon a white horse.
  • His glory (vs. 12) – His eyes are full of glory. Nothing will be hidden from Him. He wears many crowns. These crowns belong to all the vanquished kings. He will have a personal name that nobody knows. There is no point guessing! No one knows it.
  • His name (vs. 13) – His name is the Word of God. See John 1:1 & 1:14. We know who He is! It none other than the Lord Jesus. He is coming back. Jesus is the expression of God the Father. He is the Living Word. Satan tried to quote the written Word of God to the Living Word of God!

3 – The power of the return of Jesus Christ (vs. 14-16)

He is coming in power. There are two big things that confirm this:-

  • His sword (vs. 14-15) – The armies in heaven follow Him wearing clean clothing. These are the believers. We won’t have any weapons. We won’t need any. The Lord will be carrying only one weapon! Notice He has a sharp sword that proceeds out of His mouth. It is the Word of God. Just a word from Jesus and the armies of the world will be trampled under His feet. He will trample His enemies like a wine presser tramples on the grapes. We see this in the Gospels. It only took a word for Jesus to heal or calm the storm.
  • His sovereignty (vs. 16) – Jesus has a name written as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. This shows He is sovereign. He is above all others right now. When He returns the world will know it. Christians already know it to be true.
