The Power of the Tongue – James 3:1-14

This passage in James 3:1-14 gives six pictures to reveal the three powers of the tongue.

1. Power to direct – the bit and the rudder

James presents two things that are small, yet exercise great power over something bigger, like the tongue. Both the bit and the rudder must overcome contrary forces. They must be under the control of a strong hand. See Proverbs 10:19; 12:22 & 15:1.

2. Power to destroy – the fire and the wild animal

There are a number of destructive characteristics about a fire that can also be true of the tongue:-

  • It starts small and grows.
  • It creates heat.
  • It defiles.
  • It burns and hurts. Psalm 39:1-3.
  • It spreads.
  • It destroys.

A wild animal also has the power to destroy:-

  • It is restless and cannot be ruled.
  • It can be poisonous.

Yet it is possible to tame wild animals and even fire. Though it is not easy!

3. Power to delight – the fountain and the tree

A fountain shows the delightful power of the tongue.

  • It is life-giving. See Proverbs 10:11; 13:14 & 18:4, 21.
  • It is refreshing or healing. See Proverbs 12:18.
  • It cleanses. See John 15:3 & Ephesians 5:26-27.

A tree also shows the delightful power of the tongue.

  • It gives shelter and comfort. See John 6:36.
  • It bears fruit. See Proverbs 1:21.
  • It has deep roots. See Psalm 1.

A fountain cannot give forth two kinds of water. And a tree cannot bear two kinds of fruit. If the tongue is inconsistent then there is something radically wrong with the heart. See Matthew 15:18.
