The Divine Design – 1 Peter 3:1-7

Anything with no head is dead and anything with two heads is a freak. God has intended for man to be head of the home.

1 – The foundational principles for the wife

There are three.

  • Submission – There is to be in a woman a submission. It is not inferiority. It is a military term. In the military there are different ranks. God has set in the home that the man is to be the head. The Devil has obliterated the difference between the sexes. Men and woman are equal but not the same! The man is like the quarterback who calls the plays in American Football. The quarterback is not necessarily the most gifted. Someone has got to take the lead and take responsibility. The man can delegate to the woman but the responsibility is still his. Jesus is head of the church but he does not make us pray or witness. He leads by love. It is the same for the husband. Wives are to love their husbands. It is up to God to make them good.
  • Adornment of serenity – A woman is to be beautiful. She is to understand where her real beauty lies. It is not a sin to wear makeup. I think for some woman it is a sin not to wear makeup! It is the inside of the woman that can grow more beautiful. The outward beauty will not last or keep the man. Also God looks at the inside not the outside.
  • Speech – The way that Sarah spoke to her husband was with reverence and respect. A man does not want a woman to nag. The Bible says it is like continual dripping on a rainy day. The man wants to be admired by his wife. She is to be a like a cheerleader. The wife is to cheer the man on.

2 – The foundational principles for the husband (vs. 7)

There are three main problems.

  • To be the provider in the home – The man was to dress and keep the garden in Eden. Man is to be the provider. It is what he is built to do. The woman is built to nurture. Today the man is no longer seen as the main provider. Too many women are working to get things when they should be looking after their home and children. Some women have to work to put bread on the table but not for more material things. Here are seven things that a woman needs from her husband:-
    1. Spiritual leader in the home.
    2. She needs to know that she is number one in your life.
    3. You delight in her and cherish her as a person.
    4. Protect and watch over her in her areas of limitations.
    5. Quality and intimate time.
    6. Aware of her presence even when you are doing other things.
    7. Investing in her life.
  • To be the protector. To be the pastor. You are to love your wife like Christ loves the church. You can’t have a Christian home without Christians. You need to give your heart to Jesus if you have not already done so.
