How To Be Absolutely Sure – 1 John 5:5-13

From God’s viewpoint there are only two classes of people. You are either saved or lost. We can know without any shadow of doubt that you are saved. If you either in one category or the other. You cannot be half in one and half in another. You need to know what God says. The epistle of John was written so that we would KNOW that we are saved. Over 40 times John uses the word “know”. It is a certainty. Another word used 10 times is a word that is translated “witness” or “testimony”.

1 – The anointing work of Christ (vs. 6, 13)

Blood and water. See John 19:33-34. Jesus died of a broken heart. Such was the agony that he went through. It is the blood that cleanses us from sin and the water that continues to cleanse. The blood speaks of salvation and the water speaks of sanctification. You need the blood before the water. Apart from Jesus there is no eternal life. It is Christ IN you, the hope of glory.

2 – The abiding witness of the Spirit (vs. 6)

The Spirit gives witness to your salvation on the inside. Even before we are saved the Holy Spirit witnesses to you. It is the Spirit of truth. We receive the witness of men. We need to receive the witness of the Holy Spirit. We have faith everyday in something we do not see (E.g. Pilot on airplane). If you want to believe the Holy Spirit will help you to believe. A Christian with an experience is never at the mercy of a disbeliever with an argument. The witness of the Holy Spirit is far deeper than our emotions. It is God’s Spirit that speaks to you. It is not the same emotional experience that happens to a group of people. The Holy Spirit will then be able to witness through you to others.

3 – The affirming word of the Father (vs. 10)

The Bible is the record from which we learn about the work of Christ and the witness of the Spirit. The Bible was written to tell you how to get to heaven. If you do not believe the Bible you are calling God a liar. The Bible requires you to believe that it is the word of the Father. It is a record that God has given us eternal life. See Psalm 119:42-43. God has given his word.
