Man is the most complex of all creation. There is a created being that is on a higher level than man himself – the angels. See Hebrews 2:9. Jesus became a little lower than the angels. Jesus was not a created being.
1 – What we know about angels
The Bible has a lot to say about angels. There are some of these angels who have fallen. One-third of the angels fell. What do we know about angels:-
-
They are spirit beings but they have bodies. See 1 Corinthians 15:40. There is a spiritual and a physical body. See Hebrews 13:1-2. Angels could come knocking at your door.
-
Angels do appear in other forms. It could be dazzling brightness.
-
Angels are highly intelligent and they have emotions. See Luke 15:10. The angels have joy when someone gets saved. Angels are able to preach.
-
Angels don’t marry and have children.
-
Angels are not subject to death.
-
There are many, many angels.
-
They live in all three heavens.
-
They are organised into ranks and divisions.
-
Angels are mightier than men. In the OT 185,000 people are killed by one angel.
-
They minister for God and do his will in the world. We have guardian angels that protect us.
2 – Jesus is better than the angels because of his excellent name (vs. 4-5)
We are given a few names of angels in the Bible. Such as Gabriel, Michael and Lucifer. None of them have a name like Jesus. The writer of the Hebrews quotes from the Old Testament to show that Jesus is more excellent than the angels.
Angels are far higher than man. Yet the angels are far lower than Jesus Christ.
3 – Jesus is better than the angels because of his earthly fame (vs. 6-7)
When Jesus came into the world angels appeared to worship him. Jesus sits upon the throne and the angels have to stand around the throne.
The angels go through whatever they have to do to get the will of God done. Angels are serving God. Angels are serving those who are heirs of salvation. The angels are sent forth to minister to believers. The believer has guardian angels. We are not on our own in the world.
4 – Jesus is better than the angels because of his eternal claim (vs. 8-14)
There are four.
-
The claim of his person (vs. 8-9). Jesus is still on the throne. No matter what happens to the church, Jesus is still on the throne. God’s church keeps growing. Denominations may go from the truth but God’s church will still grow. The church cannot be destroyed. Jesus is still on the throne. You can’t destroy what God is doing. If you try then God may destroy you.
-
The claim of his power (vs. 10). The heavens and the earth are the work of his hands. You can do some amazing things with your hands. You can play musical instruments, build houses, etc. God is working with his hands. We are in the hands of God and being made into something better by his workmanship.
-
The claim of his permanence (vs. 11-12). The heavens and the earth will perish. Everything that is created gets old. Clothes get old and you have to get rid of them. Nations come and go but Jesus Christ remains. Some churches succeed and some fail, but Jesus Christ is permanent. See Hebrews 13:8. He is the same yesterday, today and forever! He does not change.
-
The claim of his position (vs. 13-14). Do you see the position of Jesus Christ? The king who was victorious in battle would have his feet kissed by those who were defeated and he would put his foot on the head of those who were defeated. Not only will this world that rejects God but the Devil will rejects God will also be defeated. It might be good to be touched by an angel but it is better to be saved by a Saviour.
