We want life at its best. Nobody wants to live their life in misery. Yet some people hate their lives. You can endure life. You can try and escape life. The best thing to do is to enjoy life. Life is to be enjoyed. You only have one life to live here. There are three things that we need to fully enjoy life.
1 – Compassion (vs. 1-3)
There are three things to note:-
-
It should extend to our spiritual siblings. (vs. 1). Christians are to show compassion to one another. You would think Christians would find it easy to love one another. There are some self-righteous Christians who are difficult to love. The flow of the water should not be stopped. Christians should love one another as Christ first loved us. See 1 Peter 1:22 & 1 John 4:7-11. We are to put others above our own needs. See Philippians 2:1-3. That is tough to do. We live in a world where hate is everywhere. See Matthew 24:12. The love of many has grown cold. People know you are saved if you have God’s love. See John 13:35.
-
It should extend to strangers. (vs. 2). The early Christian preachers stayed in the homes of those who believed. They travelled around meeting those they did not know. Do you extend your love to strangers? Some have entertained angels unaware. This refers to what happened to Abraham in the Old Testament. Two were angels and one was the Lord Himself. Be careful how you deal with strangers. You never know who you are dealing with.
-
It should extend to sufferers. (vs. 3). There are those who are prison or getting through times of trouble. When one part of the body hurts then all of the body hurts. Hit your finger with a hammer and notice what happens! Remember to pray from those who are suffering. Put them on a prayer list.
2 – Contentment (vs. 4-6)
Some people are never content. There are two areas that are mentioned for contentment.
-
Contentment in your marital life. (vs. 4) Marriage is a precious institution. God created it and it is good. Marriage is under attack today. Marriage is honourable in the eyes of God. The “bed” in this verse refers to sexual intercourse. You need to handle sex God’s way. The world has become sex-crazed. When it is pure, sex is powerful. It can only be pure within the narrow confines of marriage. Marriage is spiritual, anything else is not. When sex is perverted it is painful. God will punish those who practice any kind of sexual immorality. Remember God’s law of sowing and reaping! There is always a reaping time. You need to get your life right with God and you need to do it now!
-
Contentment in your material life. (vs. 5) We are not to covet for material things. We are not to fall in love with money and things. Money can buy everything but happiness. Money can’t buy you a passport to everywhere but Heaven. You don’t have to be broke to be happy! Don’t let the love for money take over your life. See Philippians 4:11 & 1 Timothy 6:6-7.
3 – Commitment (vs. 7-8)
There are two areas in which you need to be committed.
-
Commitment to your church. (vs. 7) In verses 17-24 of this same chapter we see the same thing. We are to give the leadership respect. Today this has changed. The leadership are to preach the Word of God to the Church. It takes hours to prepare. The leadership should practice as they preach. They are to set an example to those in and outside the Church. They are the under shepherd of the Church. The Church is not a democracy, monarchy or anarchy. The Church is a theocracy. It is a body that is run by God. God uses his spiritual leaders to run the Church. It is all to be conformed to the Word of God.
-
Commitment to Christ. (vs. 8) Jesus never changes. He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. We are going to change but Christ never changes. See Psalm 90:2-4 & Revelation 1:8. Jesus Christ is the one and only. We need to get our eyes off our problems and put them on Jesus. We Jesus Christ becomes the centre of your life then you will enjoy life at its best.
