God Has Spoken – Hebrews 1:1-3

The Lord God has not left us in the dark groping for answers to our eternal destiny and relationship with him. He has clearly revealed himself and his eternal purposes for his creation.

1 – The existence of God (vs. 1)

  • The first word in the book of Hebrews is “God”. There is no defence for the existence of God. God does not have to prove himself. It is obvious. The fact of creation makes it clear that there is a creator. God is the one who sent Jesus Christ.
  • The atheists and agnostics either do not believe or don’t know if God exists. The Christian knows He exists. God is a real person. He is not unknowable. You can know there is a God. In the Bible he shows anger, love and emotion. He is alive and real.
  • God has revealed Himself to mankind. Man is finite, while God is infinite. God lives outside of time and space. God does not have a beginning or ending. God came into our sphere to reveal himself. Religion tries to reach God. Christianity is God coming down and revealing himself to man. It is the only way that we can get to know God in a real way.
  • God has made himself known by looking at the heavens. Creation declares the glory of God. God has made himself known through a book. The Bible is “God-breathed”. God has also made himself known through Jesus Christ. You may not see your kite but you can feel its tug!

2 – When we speak we express ourselves. When God speaks he expresses himself

When we speak we express ourselves. When God speaks he expresses himself.

  • Partial expression (vs. 1) – God has spoke in different ways in the Old Testament – many prophets, dreams, prophecy, etc. This was to piece together God’s revelation. No one ever saw the total picture. See Hebrews 11:39.
  • God’s final expression (vs. 2-3) – Jesus Christ expresses the final word that God has to say to man. There is no new revelation that he needs to give to man. Our word of knowledge should come from the Word of God. There are seven magnificent examples of how Jesus expresses himself.
    1. Heir of all things – Jesus has inherited all things. Jesus is the second Adam and is now the new heir of all the Earth. We are children and joint heirs with Jesus Christ. There is nothing in this universe that Jesus does not own. He has the title deed. See Revelation 5:1-10. Jesus is “simply the best”. We are rich in Jesus Christ. Our riches will last.
    2. He made the world – See also Colossians 1:16. The cause is greater than the effect. Of course there is a God! This whole universe could not come into existence by accident. It is like an explosion in a printing shop forming into a copy of Encyclopaedia Britannia.
    3. He gives us his radiance – If you want to know about the glory of God then look at Jesus Christ. He shines like the sun. Jesus brings brightness to the world.
    4. Jesus is the express image of God – He is the visible image of the invisible God. See Colossians 1:15. Jesus is the icon of God. Everything that God offers is available through Jesus. See Colossians 2:9. All the fullness of the Godhood dwells in Jesus.
    5. His administration (vs. 3). Jesus is controlling and sustaining all things. See Colossians 1:17. This whole universe operates on spiritual laws, not physical laws. If Jesus does not hold it together then the universe would fall apart. Jesus keeps this universe in perfect balance. If Jesus can keep this universe working, he can keep your life working.
    6. He purged our sins. Jesus paid the price for our sins, all by himself. See Hebrews 2:9, Hebrews 7:27 & Hebrews 9:12-15, 25-26. It is all over! Jesus Christ is simply the best.
    7. His exaltation. Jesus did not stay dead. He got up from the dead and went home on a cloud of glory. He sat down because there was nothing left to do. He had done it all. There is no need for any more sacrifices for sin. Jesus has offered one perfect sacrifice for sin. If we believe and follow him our sins are forgiven. Jesus Christ is simply the best!
