Managing The Money – 1 Timothy 6:6-10

The problem with money it is not that people need more money. The problem is that people cannot manage the money that they have. The Bible tells us how to manage our money. There are three things you can do with money – you can spend it, you can save it and you can share it?

1. You need to be correct in how you see money (vs. 7)

We brought nothing into this world and we can take nothing out of this world. We were stark naked when we were born. We didn’t have a Rolex watch or suit on when we were born. We go out the same way we came in. You can’t take anything with you. Who owns the money that I earn in between birth and death? None of us own our money or property. See Psalm 24:1. The whole earth is the Lord’s and all that is on it. God owns us. He owns everything on the earth. See Psalm 50:10-12. God owns all the animals on the earth. God owns your money.

2. You need to be committed in how you share money (vs. 9)

It is the love of money that is the root of all money. When you love receiving money more than giving it then you love money. When you love money then you don’t want to give it away. See Acts 20:35 – It is more blessed to give than to receive. The first thing we should do with our money is to share. God will multiply what we have left over. See Proverbs 3:9. God should come first. God will bless. See Luke 6:38.

3. You need to be consistent in how you spend money (vs. 8)

We need to learn to save money and be content. If you have contentment then you have all the money you need. Food and clothing is the essentials. We do not need to have everything. If we can’t afford it then we can’t have it. We need to learn contentment. We need to save for our retirement. If we spend it all now then we have nothing when we retire. There are people who have plenty of money but spend it all and struggle to make ends meet, like a poor person. We each have to look out for our own financial interests. The bank or credit card companies won’t do it!

4. You need to be cautious in how you spend money (vs. 6)

Spending habits can be cured with contentment. You can get rich without wanting a lot. Be careful how you spend. Just because you can afford something doesn’t mean that you should. If you have the money in the money then you don’t have to spend it! You have to plan your spending. See Proverbs 21:5. Think about it. We need to have the right attitude about our money. There are money problems in the house and in your marriage if you don’t manage your money together. You manage the money and don’t let the money manage you. Don’t get older and broker! Don’t be swayed by what somebody else has. It is godliness with contentment that is great gain.
