In the midst of all this flux and change, one thing remains absolutely unchangeable, and that is the word of God! The message of the Bible never alters. It is always up-to-date, and always speaks to the issues of our time. The Bible is like a solid rock in the midst of a desert of shifting sand. It is the most precious object on the earth today.
Abraham Lincoln called it “God’s best gift to man.” Daniel Webster said, “If we abide by the principles taught in the Bible, our country will go on prospering and to prosper. But if we or our posterity neglect it and its instructions and authority, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us and bury all our glory in profound obscurity.” Those are prophetic words for these times. The Bible gives us the power to change. Notice three things about it:-
1 – The authority of the Bible
Why should we listen to a Book? Why is the Bible to be our authority for faith and practice for life? God tells us so! God is the author and has given it to us. The Bible is the absolute authority for belief in my head and living in my life. The only thing that does not change in this world is the Word of God. It is a solid rock in the midst of shifting sands.
2 – The uniqueness of the Bible
The Bible has been challenged through the centuries, yet it still survives. It was written over a 1,500 year span and over 40 generations with more than 40 authors. Its subject matter includes hundreds of controversial topics. Yet, the biblical authors spoke with harmony and continuity from Genesis to Revelation. There is one unfolding story: “God’s redemption of man”. It is unique in its consistency. E.g. For further study read “Evidence That Demands A Verdict”. The Word of God is inspired by the Holy Spirit. The Bible wants to make us more like Jesus.
3 – The opposition towards the Bible
See John 15:18 and 1 Peter 5:8. The world is in rebellion against God and worldly people under the influence of Satan seek to destroy your faith. You can’t be neutral to the Bible. It will either make you glad or mad! All kinds of things have happened to people of faith. Why such opposition to something that has the power to change lives? Men love darkness rather than light. The Bible is like a mirror. It shows you as you really are! We don’t want to face the truth. We could be eighty years old but we still want to see ourselves without grey hair!
See 1 Peter 1:3-4. God has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world, caused and ruled by the Devil.
