To Work Is To Worship – Colossians 3:23

How do you feel about going to work? Is it something you look forward to or detest?

1 – Back to the beginning

God intended mankind to work from the beginning. See Genesis 1:26-17. It came before the fall so it is not part of the curse.

2 – A right view of work

The idea that work itself is a curse may be one of the most stubborn myths of Western culture. See Genesis 3:17-19. It was because of the fall of mankind that work would be more difficult. However, it is still a good thing as it precedes the curse.

3 – A renewed view

See Colossians 3:23.

  • An act of worship – Do it with all your heart. We are to do our work as unto the Lord and not human masters. Are you an atheist at work? Do we allow God to work through our work? What about seeing it as God’s work? It is a ritual that we perform to the Lord like the breaking of bread and drinking of wine.
  • An issue of calling – It was Martin Luther who said, “The maid who sweeps her kitchen is doing the will of God just as much as the monk who prays, not because she may sing a Christian hymn as she sweeps but because God loves clean floors”. Is your job a vocation only? It should be our calling also, no matter what we do. See Luke 5:3. Jesus used Peter’s workplace to preach a sermon! He then takes them out to catch some fish. It went from being the worse job in the world (catching nothing) to the best job in the world (the boat is full of fish). Jesus is affirming the importance of their job.
  • Do it wholeheartedly – Be content where you are and with what you do unless God tells you to do something else. Your work has provided for you so show your gratitude. Without work we would not be able to have rest!
