Paul affirms people for what they are doing well before he comes to the difficulties. He has words of thankfulness. What news did he hear about the Church at Colossae? Paul commends them for their spirituality. This is the most important thing about Church life. There was authentic Christianity being practiced in the Church. Paul commends them for three things in his prayer to them.
1 – Faith (vs. 4a)
Notice two things about this faith.
-
It’s a saving faith – It is not a leap into the dark. There is historical evidence of Jesus. There is an absolute trust in Jesus Christ to save us from our sins. It is a faith that produces good works.
-
It’s a living faith – We are to live out our faith in our lives. This faith has to shine out to be seen by those who are living in darkness.
2 – Love (vs. 4b)
Paul mentions and asks about people by name. The saints in Colossae are trying to be real.
-
It’s God’s nature – It is not always easy or natural to love other Christians. It is however, in God’s nature. We are to love those who don’t love us. It is much harder to love your enemies.
-
It’s God’s desire for us – It is sometimes better to say something in love if someone has done something wrong. We should have a spiritual depth to our lives. If someone is sinning then we need to examine our own lives and with spiritual humility restore the person to a right relationship with God.
3 – Hope (vs. 5)
Notice that love and faith spring out from hope.
-
It impacts the present – This hope doesn’t give up. It is unwavering each day.
-
It impacts the future – We are expecting Jesus to return. We have a hope that is sure for the future. There are great things stored up for us in Heaven. We cannot see it – yet we can be sure it is glorious!
