Contrasting Worlds – Ephesians 5:9-14

What happens when the light shines on us?

1 – It produces fruit (vs. 9)

A plant needs light if it is going to survive. A plant in a dark room will die. Goodness, righteousness and truth are fruits of the Holy Spirit. These are fruits that Jesus showed to others. A life without fruits is useless.

2 – It forces us to focus (vs. 10)

Don’t mistake activity for productivity. Our activity must do two things:-

  • We must want to please the Lord.
  • We must learn what is pleasing to the Lord.

3 – It exposes the darkness (vs. 11-12)

  • Let’s be prepared to be unpopular (vs. 11). Our attitude and actions are to be different. We are to please the Lord, not man.
  • Let’s be aware of the opposition (vs. 12). Pornography, for example, is rife in the shops and TV. If this is what is going on in public then imagine what is going on in private! It should not be told or exposed. Don’t mention what the disobedient do in secret. The Devil wants to take you out! We need the armour of God or we will be defeated.

4 – It wakens us up (vs. 13-14)

There is a world that is perishing without Christ. Let your light shine on others that they might see Christ.
