The Dangers Of Angels – 2 Corinthians 11:14-15

There is plenty of evidence in the Bible concerning angels. The evidence about them from this source is only partly covered here. In recent years there has been something of an “angel craze”. Science and reason has failed to give people the answers that they seek and the spiritual dimension has become more popular again. There are dangers in getting too close to angels.

1. Angels can be good or evil

The theology of angels in the world has become an open door that is contradictory and fanciful. This only opens the door wider to the influences of Satan. Why? Satan is himself a fallen angel but masquerades as a good angel. He is incredibly evil but also incredibly deceptive. Satan has fooled mankind in Eden and ever since. Angels in the Bible want to glorify God and not themselves. A stronger belief in angels is no guarantee of an understanding of God’s truth. It can be used to ensnare people. Some people can accept a “guardian angel” and yet reject God and Jesus. There are only good angels or evil angels (known also as demons). The good angels will tell you to worship God and not them! See Revelation 22:8-9.

2. Angelic deceptions in religion

Some of the Devil’s greatest triumphs have come in the disguise of angels. They can’t all be right. These triumphs are in false religions and false Christian cults. Angels have always been involved in bringing revelation to mankind. They have also been involved in bringing false information. We know from the Bible that about a third of the angels rebelled with the Devil and were thrown out of Heaven. They are called “demons” in the Bible.

    1. Islam – Around 610 AD, Mohammad received the contents of the Koran in a series of visions from an angel that he believed to be the angel Gabriel. Given what the angel Gabriel says in Luke 1:26-38 about Jesus and what the Koran has to say about Jesus then someone is being deceived! See other articles on Islam on this site for a more detailed rebuttal. Suffice to say that Mohammad was deceived by Satan or a demon pretending to be Gabriel.
    2. Mormonism – From 1823 onwards, Joseph Smith claimed to receive visions from an angel called “Moroni”. Smith assumed that this angel was from God and the tablets were from God and not from Satan. The Mormon “church” is not Christian and contradicts so many of the New Testament teachings and doctrines. Millions have been deceived worldwide by this cult that pretends to be Christian.

These two are only representative of the many religions or cults that have their basis on a supposed revelation from an angel. Jesus was God come in the flesh and is therefore a more direct revelation! The angels that appear when Jesus is on earth only confirm His message and do not contradict it.

3. Watered-down spirituality

The sweet spiritual taste of chubby angelic cherubim can ruin the appetite of people for the good solid food of God’s Word. Some beliefs in angels offer a form of spirituality that is devoid of Jesus and God. TV programmes like “Touched by an Angel” may be entertaining for some and may even have a positive moral note but it is loaded with false ideas about God, man, salvation and angels. It has helped fuel the misconceptions that are in keeping with the angel mania of our day.

The angels of the Bible are mighty beings. The fluffy and non-judgmental angels that many claim to see are a figment of man’s imagination or demonic. They are available to everyone like an aspirin! The world today is infected with sin and filled with deceptions from the fallen angel – Satan. The angels of the Bible are always pointing us in the right direction – toward the God of the Bible and the risen Jesus Christ. See Hebrews 1:4-14 and Revelation 19:10; 22:9. Worship God – not angels!
