In comparison from chapter 15 we go to something completely different. We go quickly from the resurrection to the collection plate. Our faith is to affect our living. The two are connected. We are investing in eternity. Paul’s heart goes to the poor and needy on earth. In heaven there will unlimited resources. How we handle our money is a spiritual issue. In a recession it can be tough. There are a number of principles:-
1. Giving is based on an awareness of need
Collecting money is mentioned in Acts. Paul was financially supported by the churches. The church at Jerusalem was struggling by the large numbers, sharing of resources and there was a famine. Money was sent to them. See Acts 24:17. The Gentle churches were supporting the Jewish church. Giving is in response to vision – to make a difference. E.g. Giving financial support to churches in other countries. It is not in response to duty.
2 – Giving is an act of worship
It was on the first day of the week when the church met. Do you consider your giving as an act of worship?
3 – Giving should be systematic
It is not to be a lucky dip. We are to playfully set aside a sum of money for the needs of the church ministry.
4 – Giving is personal and individual
There are times you can give more and other times less. It is for the saints to be generous and not for the church to dictate.
5 – Giving is to be proportionate
It is in keeping with your income. Tithing is a guideline but not particularly taught in the New Testament. God is generous and we need to show our gratitude in proportion to our income. Many churches are under economic pressure as well.
6 – Money is to be handled with integrity
See 2 Corinthians 8:16-24. We are to avoid criticism. It is important to pay bills on time and not run up debt.
