The Power For The Mission – Acts 1:6-11

The disciples didn’t fully understand what Jesus meant when He talked about his “kingdom”. They had their own narrow agenda that was political and nationalistic. He was not talking about kicking the Romans out of the country and putting himself and the disciples as rulers in government. Jesus was not planning a coup. They wanted positions of influence. See Mark 10:35-41. The mission was much bigger.

1 – There was power coming from above

They had been witnessing to the resurrection of Jesus to their family and friends but they would all receive power to take the message of God’s love and salvation to the furthest parts of the world. This is the real kingdom of God that Jesus wants to set up now. His Church would consist of people from every tribe and nation. The power would come after Jesus was gone.

2 – The ascension into Heaven

The witnesses to the ascension can testify that Jesus didn’t just wander off and die somewhere. The miracle of the resurrection is succeeded by the ascension into Heaven. Jesus decides it is time to leave and those who watch are dumbstruck. It takes the words of angels to remind them that Jesus will come back the same way He has left. He has a return visit planned!

3 – Telling others about Jesus

There are many things that need to be done in our lives. The most important thing for the Christian is to tell others the truth about Jesus. This is vital. This is a life or death issue. Where is Jesus now? He is in Heaven with God the Father. Heaven is also the final destination for every true believer. One day, Jesus will come back to take His adopted children back to Heaven with Him. See John 14:11-4.
