The Living God – Acts 14:1-18

When the Gospel is preached there is first of all a decision. The Word of God is more than just words from a book. There would also be disturbance. Those who are unbelieving will cause trouble. There is either a revival or a riot. There was either an accolade or animosity. The Gospel also brings division. There is basically only two types of people – those who are saved and those who are lost. There are many people who have religion but there is only one true and living God.

1 – He is the God of reality (vs. 15a)

Our God is real. The gods that these people worship are not real. There was “vanity” or “emptiness” in these gods. These gods are nothing. Atheism is not natural to the mind of a person. Someone has to teach you atheism. They may not believe on the true God but most people in God. It is the fool who says in his or her heart that there is no God. If you go after empty gods you will become empty yourself. These gods can’t do anything for you. See Psalm 115:4-9. What sort of God do you have? Our God is a real God. God has a name and is a living God. He can talk to us and hear us. We are to turn to the living God. God has revealed himself to man. He allows us to get to know him. He has done it through nature. See Psalm 19:1. He has revealed himself in a book. See Psalm 19:7-8. He has revealed himself in his Son, Jesus Christ. See Hebrews 1:1-3.

2 – He is the God of creativity (vs. 15b-16)

There are two things to note:-

  • He has originating power. He is the only one in the universe. No one on earth has created anything original. God creates things out of nothing. Man cannot do this. Man can make and form things. God made heaven and earth. God spoke and the universe was called into existence. See Psalm 33:6. God speaks and it is done.
  • He also has terminating power. Man has two great laws of thermodynamics. (Conservation – there is no new energy being created and Deterioration – all energy dissipates. These laws can never be broken. Except by God. Scientists talk about the “big bang” at the creation of the Universe. The “big bang” will take place at the end! God has terminating power.

3 – He is the God of fidelity (vs. 17-18)

God is faithful. We can see his goodness. Our God is a good God. See Psalm 52:1 & Romans 2:4. We may not be good but He is good. As God is good, we ought to be glad. God has been good to you. He gives you everything that you need. See 1 Timothy 6:17-18. God gives us all things to enjoy. Be glad that God has given you clothes, food and health.
