Hope – Romans 15:13

The world is trying to generate hope. We read in the newspapers about the fight against terrorism. The bombers of London have been tracked down and held behind bars. The IRA have put their weapons away.

1 – The origin of hope

Our hope is to be in a foundation that is reliable. There can be no sure confidence in men and women. They will let you down. In the Bible, we see the hope of the Patriarchs, David, etc. The Psalms are full of hope. To base our hope on feelings is no foundation. Our feelings can swing from highs to lows. Our hope must be in the Lord God.

2. The experience of hope

How will this affect me right now? God wants to bless. It is more than theological. We are to pray for experience of this hope. We are in control of our feelings and we can experience peace and joy. See Psalm 16. God has pleasures that last for evermore.

  • Inward – We tend to get our hope in people. People can change. We are to get our hope in God. He does not change.
  • Upward (God-ward) – We are to meditate on God’s word and recognise it in our daily experiences.
  • Outward – Our hope is to be so full that it overflows and has an impact on others.

3. The unlimited resource of hope

The Christian has the power of the Holy Spirit. He is our resource for hope. There is no limit to the hope that He can provide. We need this resource if we are to keep hoping and not give in to despair.
