We are living in an age of experience. God is the “Unknown God” to many people today. There is a God whom we can know. He is not one among many. He is the one and only. Paul is in the city of Athens. Athens was the intellectual capital of the world at that time. There were many kinds of philosophies at this time in the city of Athens. Yet they did not know God. There was many false gods. It was easier to find a god than a person! Paul gives a sermon on how you can experience God.
1 – The existence of God (vs. 23)
See Hebrews 11:6. It is important that you believe there is a God if you are going to seek Him. The Bible does not give any scientific evidence of the existence of God. It is by faith that we understand the existence of God. We can look at cause and effect. We can look at creation and the heavens above. God has written on our conscience that he exists. See Romans 1:18-20. Our God is alive. He is not dead! According to the Bible an atheist is a fool. See Psalm 14:1. The “Unknown God” is the same word for agnostic.
2 – The expression of God (vs. 24-25)
Paul had faithfully opened the Word of God but He could not open her heart.
-
As a creator (vs. 24) – God has made the world and all the things in it. It was unpopular in Paul’s day and it is unpopular today. The theory of Evolution contradicts the two great laws of thermodynamics. Man is not a product of evolution. There is no evidence of transitions in the fossil record. They are missing because they are not there. The solution is that God created the world and all the things in it. See Jeremiah 10:12, Colossians 1:16 & Revelation 4:11.
-
As a ruler (vs. 24) – The Earth is the Lord’s. See Psalm 103:19. God rules on Earth as He does in Heaven.
-
As a giver (vs. 25) – God gives breath to all life. God does not need anything. See 1 Timothy 6:17 & James 1:17. God is a good God and delights to gives gifts to his children.
3 – His service in Jerusalem (Galatians 1:18 & Acts 9:26-29)
Paul tells them that you can experience this God! This great God is not far from us so we should seek him. He is supreme (vs. 28). You can experience this great God by repentance (vs. 30). This great God is alive and expresses himself. When they heard of the resurrection from the dead, some mocked and some wanted to hear again. (vs. 32). You can experience this great God now – he is not far away – if you draw near.
