The Christian has “Spirit guidance”. It is the Holy Spirit. The word guide in this verse has the meaning of leading a blind person. The Holy Spirit will lead every step of the way. The Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth. See Romans 8:14. The Holy Spirit pulls you in the direction of truth. He is the only guide you need as a child of God.
1 – He guides us to receive the truth (vs. 12)
Jesus had some things to say to them but they could not bear them right now. When the Holy Spirit of truth comes He will guide them into the truth. It is a specific body of truth. The world sees most things as grey, rather than any black and white. See 1 Corinthians 2:1-3. Anyone can read the Bible but it can only be understood by the Spirit of God. We have a guide who will unravel it. It is not the Mormons or Jehovah Witnesses. We are to test what other people say. It is the Holy Spirit who will guide us into the truth.
2 – He guides us to remember the truth (vs. 13)
Jesus never wrote anything down. We don’t have any writings from Jesus like we have for Paul and Peter. Jesus was depending on the reminding ministry of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit would be like Jesus and remind people of His words. See John 14:26. The Holy Spirit reminded the disciples of what Jesus said so that they could write it down. You need to study the Word of God. The Holy Spirit can’t remind you of something you don’t know!
The Holy Spirit does not speak of Himself. He reminds of Jesus. He reminds you of the time you got saved. He reminds you of the things you have read in the bible. He will remind you of the things that are yet to come. We are waiting patiently for the return of Jesus Christ.
3 – He guides us to respond to the truth (vs. 14)
The Holy Spirit will never lead you to do something contrary to the Word of God. E.g. If you think you should marry an unbeliever, then think again! See 2 Corinthians 6:14.
Do you not feel the guidance of the Holy Spirit? It could be that you are not hearing. Other things are too loud in your life. There is too much noise in the background. It is the noise of the world. It is drowning the Holy Spirit of God it. It could also be that you don’t obey the Holy Spirit. There is no guidance without obedience. We must do what He says to experience the guidance of the Holy Spirit. See Acts 13:2 & Acts 5:32. We need obedience in the things that we do know. We are to live according to the truth that we believe.
4 – He guides us to reverence the truth (vs. 14-15)
The Holy Spirit will glorify Jesus. The Holy Spirit wants us to know the truth and Christ is the truth. Jesus was the living word of God rather than the written word of God. The Holy Spirit doesn’t come to speak about Himself. His job is to speak about Jesus.
God wants us to get on the glory. The Holy Spirit resides inside the believer. We can’t stop praising the Lord Jesus. The Holy Spirit will glorify Jesus Christ. There are three steps we need to do to be guided by the Holy Spirit.
-
Acknowledge His leadership – It is a terrible thing to have someone with you and you never acknowledge him.
-
Ask for His leadership – The Holy Spirit will guide you each day. He will help you in your walk and talk.
-
Accept His leadership – This is the final step. You will be led by the Holy Spirit each day. You will know his power and presence.
