In verse one we have the phrase “Now after this…”. Something significant has occurred prior that has bearing on the verses which are about to come. In Luke 9:57-62, Jesus has been defining and describing what it means to be His disciple. Jesus’ appointment of the seventy (some texts say seventy-two) takes place after He had defined what it means to be a disciple. If we are His disciples, we will go where He sends us and do what He tells us to do. In this passage we see three things that Jesus expects us to do.
1 – Be heralds (vs. 1-24)
Jesus sends out the seventy to be his “heralds”. The sending out of this seventy is different from the sending out of the twelve and it highlights how they are to be heralds.
-
The number is different – It is not just the job of the professional to be a herald (witness). The less known or anonymous are as important as the famous. It is everyone who is to be a herald for Jesus.
-
The geography is different – The disciples were sent to the people of Israel only in Galilee and were not to go to the Samaritans or Gentiles. The seventy are being sent everywhere. It will be more difficult for them.
-
The instructions are different – The food laws do not apply. The seventy are to eat whatever is put before them. They are moving outside their comfort zone. They are not to be hung up on different ethnic groups and traditions. Greetings would be distracting with too much talking! They are to get out the message out urgently! They are to do whatever it takes. To be a herald is normal and to be expected. To have your name in the book of life is exceptional and special!
2 – Be a good neighbour (vs. 25-37)
We are to be a good neighbour to those we don’t like. This is the obvious message of the story of the Good Samaritan. We are to love our enemies. What can be?
-
Its right – Jesus taught it and clearly showed it in his life.
-
It’s challenging – It is not an easy thing. We have held back on those who do not fit our requirements for friendship. It doesn’t matter about age, gender, colour, etc.
-
It’s expected – Jesus expects this of his disciples. Those who don’t do it are not being a follower of Jesus.
3 – Take time with Jesus (vs. 38-42)
We have the story of Mary and Martha. Jesus expects us to make time for Him like Mary. Martha always had to do things. The sort of people who make tray bakes, do the dishes, make the tea, etc. Mary appears oblivious to Martha’s simmering anger. Martha eventually loses her cool with Mary, Jesus and the world! Martha is now taking it out on the guest! Mary has actually chosen the better thing. Jesus wants Martha’s attention, not her service! We are not to be too busy all the time. Jesus wants to do some service for you! It can be easier to do things, rather than take time with God and rest.
