A Trusting Moment – John 4:1-30

When it comes to Jesus, people are sceptical. This woman is going around and around in the roundabout of life. When she spends a moment with Jesus and puts her trusts in him, her life is changed.

1 – A miserable Samaritan (vs. 1-10)

  • The misery of her isolation – She comes in the middle of the day. It was normal to go early in the morning. She is avoiding all the other woman. Why? In verses 17-18 we can see that she has had five husbands and was living with one who was not her husband. She is a social outcast.
  • The misery of her ignorance – This woman tries to argue religion with the Lord Jesus. Jesus tells her that if she only knew who she is talking to! This could be said to anyone in the world who is not a Christian. If you only knew what Jesus Christ can do in your life.
  • The misery of her inconsistencies – She has been married five times and the one she is with now is not her husband. That is a lot of husbands! We don’t know her age. It is unlikely that they all died. She is living a hypocritical life.

2 – A matchless Saviour (vs. 8-11)

Notice how gently deals with her.

  • Grace (vs. 4) – Most Jews went miles out of their way to avoid the Samaritans. Jesus went there to meet this woman. He sat down at the well to wait for her to arrive.
  • Graciousness (vs. 25) – He reveals himself to the woman as the Saviour.
  • Gift (vs. 10) – Jesus has living water that he can give to those who ask. She had not been satisfied by five husbands. You don’t have to keep coming back for this water! This water would satisfy this woman for her lifetime. This woman had been going to many wells for water but this was the only one that would satisfy.

3 – A marvellous salvation

This person can hurt people with the tongue. This person uses word to hurt other people. A person who is wise will speak gracious words. The fool will swallow himself up with his own words. See Colossians 4:6 & Ephesians 4:29. The fool will tear down. The wise man will build up with his words. Will you be a hurtful fool because the other person is? A soft answer turns away wrath. You don’t need two fools in the house! There will be wrath. Someone is going to get hurt. A wise person will be gracious. He will not be continually bringing up the past. Let the past be the past. If you can control your tongue, you can control your whole body. See James 3. No man can tame it but God can tame it. The hurtful fool does not know when to stop talking. They use too many words.

See what can happen – all because of one dead fly! Don’t let the fly get into your ointment.
