The Sabbath is not just a good idea, it is a God idea! We all need to have a Sabbath rest. We need to stop working and have a rest. We need it to keep our perspective. We need to make the best use of our time but rest is not wasted time. We need to stop so we can:-
1 – Celebrate
We can celebrate life. Worship is essential.
2 – Listen
We can hear what God is saying. We are usually so busy and so distracted that we don’t use our ears to listen to what God is saying to us. Are you listening?
3 – Remember
Communion is important. We can remember what God has done for us. God has done much for us. Busyness causes us to lose sight of this.
4 – Anticipate
We are to look forward to our time of rest. All work and no play make us stressed out. See Hebrews 4:9. The Sabbath is a foreshadow of a rest to come! This rest is forever.
5 – Play
Is it appropriate on a Sunday morning? It goes against the work ethic of many people. We are not merely workers. We are also players. Do you remember having fun? When was the last time you took a day off to just play? Are you just all work and no play? Does there need to be a point to it? There doesn’t need to be a reason to do things for play. If it makes you feel alive and gives you pleasure. In the film “Chariots of Fire”, Liddell runs for the sheer pleasure. He knows that God has made him for a purpose – to go to China and run fast!
“Take a rest; a field that has rested gives a bountiful crop.” [Ovid]
“He does not seem to me to be a free man who does not sometimes do nothing.” [Cicero]
“Employ thy leisure time well, if thou meanest to gain pleasure.” [Benjamin Franklin]
