Mary’s Little Lamb – Luke 2:1-7

A little lamb was born in Bethlehem. It was no accident that Jesus was born in Bethlehem. It is about 5 miles south of Jerusalem and was prophesised in Micah 5:2. Around Bethlehem shepherds raised Passover lambs. Jesus is born in a stable. Mary’s little lamb was God’s lamb to the world.

1 – The prophecy of the lamb (Exodus 12:1-8)

God is going to use a lamb to deliver them. A lamb is meek and gentle. It has no fangs or claws. Everything about a lamb says eat me! There is a battle between the lamb and the serpent. The Egyptian sceptre had a serpent coiled around it.

  • Special lamb (vs. 5) – It had to be without blemish. It spoke of Jesus’ perfection.
  • Slain lamb (vs. 6) – On the fourteenth day the lamb was killed. It spoke of Jesus on the cruel cross.
  • Saving lamb (vs. 7) – Take the blood and put it on the door posts. When God sees the blood (of the lamb only) He will pass by.
  • Shared lamb (vs. 8) – The lamb was not only slain but roasted. Jesus suffered God’s rejection and descended into Hades.

2 – The lamb in history (John 1:29, 36)

See also 1 Corinthians 5:7 7 1 Peter 1:19.

  • Special lamb – Jesus was born of virgin birth.
  • Slain lamb – Jesus had no earthly father. The blood that flowed through the veins of Jesus and was shed was God’s blood. See Acts 20:28.
  • Saving lamb – Jesus died for us. God’s lamb is being examined at the same as the Passover lambs. Jesus is our Passover lamb. There is no need to keep and kill little lambs anymore. Jesus was sacrificed once for all.
  • Shared lamb – At the Lord’s table we feed upon the lamb.

3 – The lamb in victory (Revelation 5:1-7)

Jesus takes the title deed for the earth. No one else is worthy to open the book. The Dragon and the Beast look so strong and fierce. Looks can be deceiving! John sees a little lamb that has been slain. Jesus still bears the souvenirs of the earth. Jesus is standing. He is making intercession. He has seven horns. He is a strong lamb. He is all seeing and knowing. He is able to take the book.

4 – The lamb in majesty (Revelation 5:8-12)

The lamb has become the ruler and redeemed people from every tribe, tongue, people and nation. See also Revelation 15:3, 17:14, 19:9 & 21:22.
