Treasuring Marital Fidelity – Matthew 19:1-6

1 – The provision of the married life (vs. 4)

Marriage came before law, government and religion. The ultimate authority of marriage rests with God.

2 – The priority of the married life (vs. 3-6)

Marriage is supreme above any other earthly commitment. Parents are not the supreme commitment. The purse and apron strings are to be cut. Children are not the supreme commitment. They will eventually leave. Work is not the supreme commitment.

3 – The product of the married life (vs. 3-6)

The two shall become one flesh. God’s plans are for your good and for your welfare. See 1 Corinthians 7:3-5. God gave sex for procreation but also for fellowship, joy and communication. God is keeping sex for you. Adultery is ugly when it is out of place.

4 – The pollution of the married life (vs. 7-9)

Adultery is a sin that dilutes and pollutes the married life. You sin against your own body. See 1 Corinthians 6:18. There is no sin more harmful than the sin of adultery. Marital fidelity is the glue that holds the family together. For a believer it is also a sin against the church. See 1 Corinthians 3:16. Adultery is an act against the nation. See Proverbs 13:24. Adultery is a sin against the Lord. See Psalm 51:4. It is one of the Ten Commandments to not commit adultery.

5 – The preservation of the married life

Here are some things that you can do:-

  • Decision – make a decision that you are going to live for God.
  • Dependence – It is not enough for you to decide. You need God’s help.
  • Devotion– Love the Lord and love you partner as the Lord loves you yourself.
  • Development – Nurture your live every day. Loving is a growing thing. Like a flower. Learn to flirt with your wife. You have only one “sweetheart” or “dear”. Discipline– Flee fornication. Keep away from sin. Don’t put garbage in your mind.
  • Determination – Fix your heart. Make up your mind to stay steadfast by the grace of God.
