You will never have absence of problems. Peace is the addition of power to overcome problems. See Psalm 42:7. Sometimes we seem to be engulfed in a storm. See Matthew 14:22. This tells us how to have peace in the midst of the storm.
1 – Providence (vs. 22)
They were in the ship because Jesus told them to get in. Jesus put them in the storm. Did he not know there was going to be a storm? There is a false theology that says that if we are holy we will not have any problems. There are correcting and perfecting storms. Nothing takes God by surprise. If you are in a storm it is God’s purpose that brought you there. God does not say oops!
2 – Entreaty (vs. 23)
Jesus is praying for us in the midst of our storm. See Mark 6:47, 48. Jesus ever lives to make intercession for us. We are all on his prayer list!
3 – Entreaty (vs. 23)
Jesus will be more real to you in the midst of the storm. Jesus came to them in the midst of the storm, walking on the waves. Remember Daniel and his friends? God was with them with the lions and in the fire. He said it is I – “I am”. In your storm you need to keep your eyes on the Lord Jesus or you will start to sink in your storm. If you look at circumstances you will be distressed, if you look within you will be depressed, look at Christ you will be at rest! God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in times of trouble. Even in the eye of the worst storm there is a centre that is calm. You need to rest.
4 – Comfort (vs. 26)
It takes power to walk on water. Comfort means “come forth with strength”. Jesus is teaching the lesson that God wants to give you power to sustain you in your storm. Jesus walks on the very waves that they were afraid of. See John 16:33. The waves that they were afraid would cover their heads is under the feet of Jesus. All things are under the feet of Jesus. Are all things under your feet? They should be. He has is our head and we are the body. Like Peter we can overcome the storms.
5 – Expectation (vs. 30)
Peter started to sink as he looked at the waves. Jesus had commanded them to go to the other side. He brought them through to the other side. Jesus is going to bring you through. You do not have to know all the detail of how. Jesus kept Peter from sinking by taking his hand. God helps us if we place our trust in him. He truly brings peace in the midst of our storms.
