See also Mark 5. Jesus proves in this miracle that He has power over demons. See 1 John 3:8. Jesus came to destroy the works of the Devil. This is exactly what He did. See also Luke 11:20. People were amazed when Jesus cast our demons. They had seen the tricksters but this was something totally different. Jesus could command Satan and the demons. See Acts 19:13-17. This is one of the funniest incidents in the Bible!

1 – His condition (Mark 5:2-5)

The man was in a wretched condition. Notice three things:-

• His home – This man has a demon and he is living among the dead. His home is in the cemetery. The demon had totally taken over the man. When the devil takes over you are separated from God.
• His helplessness – Nobody could contain him. He was out of control. He had superhuman strength. He was sold out to the devil. No man could help him or contain him.
• His hopelessness – He was tormented night and day. He would cut himself. Everyone was afraid of him. He would cry out with pain.

2 – His helper (Mark 5: 6)

The whole scene changes when he saw Jesus. He falls on the ground and worshipped Jesus. No one could control Him, except Jesus. Even demons know how Jesus is. See James 2:19. Jesus does not need to introduce himself. No one else could help him. This man could not come to Jesus so Jesus made his way to this man. The demons want to know if Jesus is going to judge them now. Demons know what their future will end badly. Demons can bow before Jesus but people shake their fist in the face of God.

3 – His conversion (Mark 5: 8-17)

This man goes from the depths of slavery to freedom in an instant.

• It was divine – Jesus does not get into any deep conversation with the Devil. He tells the demons to go. When Jesus shows up the devil has to get out of town!
• It was dramatic – The demons enter into the swine that run over the cliff into the sea. There were two thousand pigs that were destroyed by these demons. No wonder this man was in torment.
• It was definite – The man was sitting quiet, clothed and in his right mind. When people saw this they were afraid. They had to run and tell others. The leaders wanted Jesus to leave the region. See John 14:27. Jesus will calm you down and give you peace. This is what Jesus does in your life. He had been running around naked but now he is wearing clothes. He no longer insane but in his right mind. See John 14:26. When you come to know Jesus Christ a change happens on the inside out. Jesus is Lord over demons. Legion has to go home now.
