How To Weather The Storms Of Life – Matthew 7:24-26

There are many superficial saints. When the storms come they are blown away. We are to build our house upon the ROCK. If the bottom falls out of your life you need to examine your foundation.

1 – You need to erect a sturdy building

We are all building a spiritual house. In vs. 24 there are two types of builders – wise and foolish. There are builders, hit by the same storm and seemingly the same basic plan of house. The difference was below the surface. The difference was in the foundation.

  • The rock builder – He dug deep. It was more costly and time-consuming. It withstood the storm.
  • The sand builder – It was a quick job. It collapsed when the storm was severe.

2 – The house on the rock (vs. 24)

It requires both hearing with doing.

  • Hearing the Word of God.
  • Doing the Word of God. See James 1:22. See James 2:14ff. Faith without works is dead. Faith and works are heads and tail of the same coin. While we are saved by faith alone, the faith that saves is never alone. It is more than just head assent. The devil and demons believe in one God and they tremble at that thought. The devil believes in one God, the virgin birth, resurrection, etc. However, they will not bow the knee to Jesus Christ. Some so-called Christians have less faith then the devil and demons. Faith without works is dead. A dead body can have a heart, mouth, etc but it is still dead! There are millions of people who are going to church each day but they are dead.

3 – You can expect a stormy blast (vs. 25)

There will be storms in your life – water above and below and winds all around. No matter that the house is built upon a rock. A faith that cannot be tested is a faith that cannot be trusted. You need to get your theology from the Word of God and not feelings and emotion. Difficulty in your life does not mean that God has abandoned you.

4 – You can experience the steadfast blessing

The house will not fail because it is built upon a rock. Those who fail have built upon the muck and silt which cannot support the house. The house needs to have a firm foundation. Judas and Peter heard the words of Jesus. Judas had the best looking house (He was made the treasurer). No one suspected Judas was the traitor. He knew how to look good on the outside. Judas had a foundation of sand. Peter’s house was not pretty on the outside but he had a firm foundation. He denied the Lord three times but still he persevered. When the storm comes only those houses built on the rock will stand.
