God’s Way or the Highway – Matthew 7:12-13

The Sermon on the Mount was the greatest sermon preached by the greatest preacher. In these verses Jesus makes it known that there is a way that leads to eternal destruction and a way that leads to eternal life. Jesus gives us a choice between life and death. We can take God’s way or the highway. You can’t use visa to get into heaven.

1 – A hellish deception (vs. 13)

There is a wide gate and wide road that leads to destruction. It is an easy road to travel but it leads to destruction.

  • An inclusive road – This wide road is popular as there is plenty of room. You can take all the baggage you want. This road is all inclusive. There are no rules or requirements on this road. You will find the drunkard, rapist and murderer on this road.
  • An indulgent road – You indulge in anything you want. The atheists, agnostics and communists are on this road. There will also be people from all religions on this road. Even Christian ones! See Proverbs 14:12. It seems the right road to some but it is not. Being in the choir will not get you to heaven. Good deeds will not get you into heaven. There is a narrow road called “Grace Avenue” with a “Faith Car” being driven by Jesus. It is the grace of God that we are saved by faith alone in Christ alone. This indulgent road is one without Jesus.

2 – A heavenly direction (vs. 14)

This gate and road leads to life. There are few that find this road. This road is not as popular. It is narrow along this way. You can’t bring all your baggage on this road. You have to leave it behind. This makes this road unpopular. You have to deny yourself before you get on this road. You have to drop your pride. Who is the way to heaven? The gate is Jesus. Salvation is only through this gate. There is only one way. See John 10:9 and Acts 4:12. There is only one mediator between heaven and earth. See 1 Timothy 2:5. The problem is not that the gate is too small for people to get in. The problem is that some people are too big to go through the gate. We need to be humble as a young child. We come to Jesus with nothing and he makes us someone. If we think we are someone when we come to Jesus then we get nothing from him. It is God’s way or the highway.

3 – A holy decision

Which road will you choose? Jesus commands us to choose the narrow road. We are to walk in. There are no other roads. You can look at the gate, take a picture of the gate and even touch the gate. You must enter in through the gate. Hell is the same for the unbeliever as for the thief and murderer. See Acts 26:28. King Agrippa was almost persuaded to become a Christian. That word “almost” kept him from deciding for Christ. You can take a four-lane road to hell or a one lane road to heaven. The decision is yours.
