Celebrate the King – Matthew 22:1-14

This is a story of a king whose son is getting married. Invitations are sent out for people to attend.

1 – A royal feast

Jesus is the royal son of the king of heaven. You will never settle the sin question until you settle the son question. See Psalm 2; John 3:16-18; John 3:36-37 & Matthew 17:5. The feast honours the king’s son. You cannot honour the father without honouring the son. It is an insult to the king and his son to not attend.

2 – A rich feast

The very best of food is laid out for the feast. It is a rich feast. The devil would have you believe that there are no great rewards in heaven. The young people become rootless, then restless and then ruthless and then remorseless. The devil wanted Eve to think negatively about God. God had not forbidden all the fruit in the garden – only one tree! God has only the best of the best. The devil’s food is not fit to eat. All his apples have worms.

3 – A ready feast

When the food is ready and on the table it is the time to come and dine! If your wife tells you your dinner is on the table you had better come! E.g. “Do you want it in the bin or the dog?” When you get Jesus you get everything.

4 – The king’s wrathful indignation

The feast is ready but many of those invited refused to come.

  • They would not – They just would not come. They would not give it serious thought.
  • Mockery – They joke about holy things and laugh themselves into hell.
  • Hostility – Their hearts were hardened.
