A Blessing For The Blind – Matthew 9:27-31

Jesus brings a blessing to the blind. Blindness was far more common in ancient times than today. This is the condition that Jesus heals in the New Testament more than any other.

1 – The cry of these men (vs. 27)

They were continually crying out. Their cries are loud screams. They are trying to get the attention of Jesus. They show great persistence. Notice two things about the cry of these men:-

  • They had the right knowledge about Jesus. They called Him “Son of David”. This was a Messianic title. They “saw” Jesus as the promised Messiah. The Son of David would rule for ever. We all need the right knowledge about Jesus. It doesn’t matter about the right knowledge of Alexander the Great. If two blind men can know who Jesus Christ is then we should know.
  • They had the right attitude about Jesus Christ. They knew the only thing they were worth of was mercy. They must have read their Old Testament. See Psalm 145:8. It is by God’s mercy that we are not killed today. God is full of mercy. God’s mercies and blessings are new every morning. We don’t want God to give us what we deserve! We need God to give us mercy!

These men may have been blind but they knew how to approach Jesus. How could they have so much vision?

2 – The confrontation of these men (vs. 28)

They managed to keep up with Jesus even though they are blind. They were persistent. They get into the house and now Jesus does the talking. In all the miracles in Matthew we see persistence. It is an important quality. Jesus asks them if they believe He is able to heal them. Jesus wanted to hear it from their mouth that it was true. They professed it be true. God wants us to publicly profess Jesus.

3 – The conversion of these men (vs. 29-31)

It was according to their faith that they would be healed. Jesus did not ask for any money to be sent to his ministry. There was more than physical healing that took place. Their “spiritual eyes” were opened. They needed faith and they were saved. See Ephesians 2:8-9. What else will faith do for you?

  • Faith will help you live a satisfied life. With faith you will fear no evil. See Psalm 23.
  • Faith will bring you through great tribulations. You can look beyond the things of this earth. God is in control. Don’t put your faith in other people, drink, drugs or pop stars. Put your faith in Jesus Christ.
  • Faith will sustain you. It will not let you go.
