The Heart Of The Matter – Jeremiah 31:31-34

See also Matthew 26:27-28 and Hebrews 8:8. Jeremiah prophesied for 40 years to five different kings. God called Jeremiah from early days. It is Jeremiah who announces this new covenant.

1 – Benefactors of the covenant

  • Word of God – The day is coming when God will do something about the wayward nation. God is still speaking through His Word today.
  • Work of Christ – Galatians 3:25-28.

2 – Benefits of the covenant

  • Relationship – God speaks to His people at a time of national rebellion. The old covenant had been broken. God was their husband and they had been unfaithful. Instead of needing to be reminded of God on a regular and daily basis, we will enjoy such intimacy with him that we will be continually in His presence.
  • Redemption – God will write his law on their hearts. Jeremiah has already told us what is currently written on our hearts in 17:1 where he remarks that sin and rebellion are like stone tablets within us.

3 – Beneficiaries of the covenant

The people of God are on the receiving end of this covenant. Are you in this new covenant or are you out of covenant? You need to be in a covenant relationship with God. If you are in the covenant relationship you need to keep faithful to it.
