Guarded Heart – Proverbs 4:23-27

See also Matthew 15:19 & Jeremiah 17:9. We need to guard our heart. What are you doing to guard your heart?

1 – A theatre of conflict and the citadel of man

Our heart and mind is a citadel. There is conflict and Satan is the enemy. The theatre of conflict is the human heart. If the citadel falls then the whole town must surrender.

2 – Remember holy habits

We need to remember as it all too easy to forget to do these things each day.

  • Prayer.
  • Solitude.
  • Silence.
  • Study.
  • Meditation.
  • Fasting.
  • Service.
  • Simplicity
  • Confession

3 – The influence of three body parts (vs. 24-27)

If we are to guard our heart then we need to watch the influence of three things:-

  • Mouth – the talk (vs. 24) – What we say does matter. It reflects our heart. The words also reflect our heart condition. See James 3:16.
  • Eyes – the focus (vs. 25-26) – We are to fix our eyes directly on two things.
  1. The invisible. See 2 Corinthians 4:18. Irish proverb – “What fills the eye fills the heart”. There’s more in life than what can be seen.
  2. We are to fix our eyes on Jesus. See Hebrews 12:2. It is hard to focus our eyes on Jesus.
  • Feet – the walk (vs. 27) – The feet walk us into the wrong places. There are safe places to walk. We are to walk in God’s way. See Deuteronomy 5:33; Psalm 89:15; Isaiah 2:5; 2 John 6 and 1 John 2:6.

What are you doing to guard your heart? We are to make it our top priority.
