Faithfulness – Galatians 5:22

In Yellowstone, Old Faithful blasts off every 65 minutes. Faithfulness is a quality that is much sought after today and hard to find.

Frequently a backslider does not know that they are a backslider. You need to have gone forward in order to slide back. See 2 Samuel 7. David was a man after God’s own heart. He was a courageous man. (Fought lions, goliath, etc) He was a gifted man. (Musician, poet, etc.) He was a humble man. He was a noble man. (He would not touch Saul). Yet he fell hard.

1. The marks of faithfulness

Here are five to consider:-

  • We need to be faithful to our families. The religion that does not begin at home is no religion at all. Adultery is the ultimate act of unfaithfulness. You can have a love affair with your work, sport or money. Children remember promises that you do not keep. Luke 16:10.
  • We need to be faithful with our money. What would you do if you had one million pounds? What are you doing with the £100 now is an indicator. If you cannot be trusted with money you cannot be trusted with spiritual gifts. If you get materially right then God will bless you spiritually.
  • We need to be faithful with our friends. See Proverbs 17:17. Do you have a friend you can count on? Are you a friend like that?
  • We need to be faithful to our church. See Romans 12:5. Hebrews 10:25. We should not forsake going to church. You come to church to give and not just receive.
  • We need to be faithful to the faith. To the word of God. We need to pass the faith on to others.

2. The motivation of faithfulness

The incredible faithfulness of God is our greatest motivator. What a joy it is to know that if we confess our sins that he is faithful to forgive us. God has given us the promise of victory. See 1 Corinthians 10:15. The Devil is not able to take us from the hand of God. God’s mercies are new every morning. Great is God’s faithfulness.

3. The method of faithfulness

These three things are important to be faithful in.

  • Be faithful in the small things. See Luke 16:10. All big things are made up of smaller things. It is the smaller things that count. If you are faithful in small things you will be faithful in bigger things. If you can’t do the smaller things then you won’t get the bigger things.
  • Be faithful in the secret things. It does not matter if no one else knows about it.
  • Be faithful in the sacred things. Keep your heart warm and right with God.
