The Psalms touch every note in the human emotions. The Psalms are frequently quoted in the New Testament. Jesus quoted many times from the Psalms. Why are they so special? The Psalms are poems and hymns of worship. They would be sung on the way to the Temple. They would be used to praise God. They elevate God. They were also prayers to God. See Psalm 51. Some Psalms were written in times of trouble. This is true of Psalm 46. Here are three things to do when you are in trouble:-
1 – You are to go to your refuge (vs. 1-3)
-
In the storm of stress – “trouble”. When stress comes we have a refuge where we can get some strength. Times of depression can come upon us. God is our refuge. He is not dead. He is our refuge and strength. He is a mighty fortress that never fails.
-
In the storm of sorrow – “trouble”. He is a very present help in a time of trouble. In a tight spot, God is there. God is with us in our storm of sorrow. As a result of this, we will not fear. We are to go to our refuge.
-
In the storm of solitude (vs. 7) – The Lord is with us. You may feel that you are alone. It is not true. He promised to never leave us alone.
2 – You can also go to your river (vs. 4-7)
The city of Jerusalem was under attack. It did not have a natural river running through the city. Hezekiah had water directed into the city from springs. The people were glad because they had a hidden source of water. We have a river too. We don’t always use this river. See Jeremiah 2:13. They used cisterns that could hold no water. Jesus represents that water. See John 4:13-14 & John 7:37-39. Jesus was speaking about the Spirit. We have a river on the inside. When enemy is on the outside, go to your river on the inside. This water satisfies you. Go to this river in times of trouble. There is a resident in this river. God is in the midst of this river. The trouble cannot overwhelm you if you go to this river. God is in our midst in the midst of the storm.
3 – You can go to your ruler (vs. 8-11)
You can trust in God. The people could see what God will do to protect his children. The enemy will not defeat God. God will be exalted. Satan wants to rule and reign but God says his kingdom is coming down. We need to be still and know that He is God. There does not need to be drama if we trust in God. He will be exalted See 1 Chronicles 29:10.
