This Psalm has nature (vs. 1-6), then the law of God (vs. 7-11) and then the connection between the two (vs. 12-14).
1 – Nature (vs. 1-6)
There is a torrent of speech about the creation of God. We don’t hear it, but we can see it! You look to the heavens and you see the glory of God. There is no need for translation. God’s creation is pouring out speech. The sun in particular is mentioned. The sun shines and exposes the darkness. It does this day after day without getting tired or taking a break.
2 – The law of God (vs. 7-11)
We sometimes see the law of God as a burden. It is a weight that we carry. In these verses we are told that it is sweet in our mouth and precious in our heart. It is not designed to shackle or weigh us down. The yolk of Jesus is light but we need to count the cost. However, there is eternal life at the end! There is also a cost in NOT walking in God’s way. God’s law is more precious than gold. It makes you cleaner than water and it is tastier than honey.
3 – Conclusion (vs. 12-14)
The sun and God’s law are dependable. Day by day it completes its work in us. We cannot live or survive without the sun and the law of God. The sun and the law both go straight with no deviation. They both bring life and both burn up in judgment. They both penetrate and purify.
There are benefits to obedience of God’s law. Nature follows laws laid down by God. It is done with joy and enthusiasm every day. It follows the way of God perfectly. It is the best for the world. If the sun decides not to get up one day then we are destroyed. The sun is fresh in its obedience to God’s law. It is an example for us to follow. All of creation follows God’s law and speaks to God’s glory. We need to follow a straight path – just like the sun.
The message is to the world and to the individual. There is to be penitent prayer in the spirit of the individual. The burning heat of the sun cannot penetrate the human heart. Only God’s law can do that. Our lives are to speak words to those who see it – just like the sun.
