The Tree and the Chaff – Psalm 1:1-6

1 – The Tree – The Godly Man (vs. 1-3)

  • Negatively – There are three things the godly man will not do:- “Walking – standing – sitting” “Counsel – way – seat” “Ungodly – sinners – scornful” These three triplets denote successive steps in a career of evil and each category moves toward a climax.
  • Positively – The secret of a life that is acceptable to God is delight, meditation and continuance in the law of the Lord.
  • Consequently – The true Christian is characterised by the following: – Vitality – “A tree” Security – “Planted” Capacity – “by the streams (canals) of water” Fertility – “that brings forth its fruit” Propriety – “in its season” Perpetuity – “its leaf also shall not wither” Prosperity – “whatsoever he does shall prosper”.

2 – The Chaff – The Ungodly Man (vs. 4-6)

The worse that can be said about the ungodly is that they are not like the godly. They are not trees but chaff. The one defies the storm, but the other is driven before it. He who “stands” in the way of sinners (vs. 1) shall not “stand” in the judgment (vs. 5). There are only two ways and two ends (vs. 6). See Matthew 7:13-27.
